Vintage Mexican Folk Art Marquetry Mexican Hat Dance
Artes Folklorico presents a spectacular vintage Mexican ‘marquetry’ painting.  Marquetry, or wood inlay, became popular in Mexico in the 18
th
century.  It required exceptional skills.  It could be found in high-end furniture as well as to create paintings.  A variety of woods were available in Mexico including balsam, Mexican cherry, mahogany, maple, cedar, orangewood, lemonwood, sapote, pine, mulberry, palisander and granadilla, to name a few.  Marquetry works of art could be found in Mexico City, Puebla, Tlaxcala, Oaxaca, Campeche and Durango.  The wonderful are extremely rare piece features a couple in traditional dress doing the Mexican Hat Dance, or Jarabe Tapatio.  This is the national dance of Mexicans.  The piece showcases the extraordinary skills of the artist.  As if trying to show off, there is an extremely intricate border around the central artwork that is hard to believe one could do (see photographs).  The piece was constructed to look like it has a frame build it!  One could certainly place this in a larger frame if desired.  The marquetry is in excellent vintage condition with minimal signs of wear (see photographs).  The piece is signed in the lower right corner but we were not able to make it out.  The artwork measures 12-inches in height, 9-inches in width and 7/16-inch in depth.  This is a museum quality find for anyone that collects vintage, old or antique Mexican folk art, marquetry, wood inlay or artwork featuring the Jarabe Tapatio.  Please take a look at the other Mexican folk art we have up for auction.
