    Lady of Guadalupe Tin Nicho
    Handcrafted Folk Art from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico
    This hand painted nicho is a loving tribute to Our Lady of Guadalupe. The hand-painted frame is decorated with yellow flowers inside the compartment and a metal milagro glued to the top of the frame, inside the redheart. The frame has a hinged door that opens to a compartment holding a printed image of the Virgin, surrounded by golden thread-work. You can add your own tiny decorations, milagros, coins or flowers to the compartment. This beautifully-decorated nicho has a hook on back to hang on a wall. It measures 6 1.2 inches tall by 5 inches wide by 1 inch thick. This is handcrafted at the workshop of the San Miguel de Allende tinsmith Jaime Hdz. Cruz.
    ABOUT THE ART:
    The tradition of making nichos goes back to the Spanish Colonial period of Mexican history. There were used as shrines for patron saints or pictures of loved ones. Tin work (hojalata) is one of Mexico's most colorful crafts, and popular with tourists and collectors of folk art. Tin can be easily bent, crimped, cut and soldered to form intricate shapes. It has a brilliant appearance similar to silver, but it is also surprisingly light and durable. In San Miguel de Allende, where these nicho boxes come from, many new designs are keeping workshops busy producing picture frames, wall decor and plaques, Christmas decorations, rattles and a wide variety of whimsical toys, all painted in brilliant lacquer paints and enamels.
