    At the Battle of Gettysburg, the 11
    th
    Pennsylvania was initially commanded by Colonel Richard Coulter who took over command of the brigade on July 1, 1863.  Captain Benjamin F. Haines took command of the regiment until he was wounded on July 3.  Captain John B. Overmyer then took over the regiment.
    The dog on the memorial to the 11
    th
    Pennsylvania is Sallie, the regiment’s mascot.  Although separated from the men when they retreated to Cemetery Hill, the brindle bull terrier remained where they had fought, with the dead and wounded, and rejoined the 11
    th
    Pennsylvania after the battle.  She remained with them until struck and killed by a bullet at the Battle of Hatcher’s Run in October 1864.
    The monument is located on Doubleday Avenue, in Gettysburg, PA, and was dedicated on September 3, 1889.
